EAST MIDLANDS · WETLAND VISIT
A little more nature in your day
Former gravel pits beside the River Trent have become a landscape of lakes, islands and wildlife habitat at Attenborough. You can make the Nature Centre and a short waterside pause the focus of your day, rather than feeling that a visit requires a circuit of the whole reserve.

At a glance
Dogs
Dogs must be kept on leads on the reserve. Well behaved dogs are welcome in the Nature Centre.
Prams
Choose a route with staff. Bridges may have steeper slopes and temporary diversions can alter the outing.
Children
Lakes, islands and birds offer plenty to notice. Keep children close beside water and use visitor paths.
Wheelchairs
The Nature Centre is on one level, with a level approach from the car park. Wider routes include bridge slopes and may flood in very wet weather.

Getting there and choosing an entrance
The Nature Centre is on Barton Lane, Chilwell, NG9 6DY. Its car park is reached from the A6005 and opens at 8am, closing at dusk. Parking charges apply, including to Blue Badge holders unless an exemption applies. Use the current parking information rather than an older flat fee quoted elsewhere. The railway station and bus stops require an onward walk.
Find Attenborough Nature Reserve on Google MapsMap pins help locate a place. They do not verify a suitable parking bay or the route from it.

Surfaces and mobility
The centre’s facilities information describes accessible parking and a level approach, with a wheelchair available to borrow for the journey from the car park. Arrange any equipment with the centre first. Around the reserve, bridge slopes and flood conditions need a separate check. Ask which short route and hide are currently reachable before setting off, especially while Works Bridge diversions remain.
If you use a walking stick or frame, allow enough energy for the return and choose your turning back point early. If you use a wheelchair, ask about the exact approach, thresholds and assistance you may need.
For a first visit with sight loss, consider a companion who can describe junctions and changes in surface. The details above do not establish a tactile trail or independent wayfinding.

Toilets, refreshments and resting
The Nature Centre has toilets, including an accessible toilet, available during its opening hours. A café and shop provide a useful base for a shorter outing. Centre hours change seasonally and differ from outdoor reserve access. Do not assume that toilets remain available until the car park closes. Check the current timetable and plan your return around the earliest closing time that matters to you.

Wildlife and changing seasons
Flooded former gravel pits and islands provide habitat for waterbirds. In winter, spend time looking across the lakes for changing groups of ducks rather than hurrying between viewpoints. Hides offer places to watch quietly; ask the centre which are open, reachable and require an access code. Keep waterbirds undisturbed and leave them to find their natural food.
Rain, leaves, frost and shorter daylight can change the feel of a route. Check the forecast and adjust the visit to the conditions you find, rather than feeling you must finish a walk.

Check the bridge update
Temporary works can change a familiar route. Please use the Trust’s latest update before travelling and follow barriers or diversions on arrival. A planned replacement date is not confirmation that a bridge has reopened.
