NORTHUMBERLAND NATIONAL PARK
A peaceful valley, with access worth planning
Hethpool is a starting point for exploring College Valley, a quiet landscape of hills, woodland and a rushing burn in the Cheviots. This is one of the park’s strong wild place destinations, with room to appreciate scenery without aiming for a summit.
The practical question is how to reach the part of the valley you want to enjoy. Vehicle access beyond Hethpool is controlled, and the popular paths are not automatically suitable for a short or wheeled visit. Plan those details before travelling.

At a glance
Check the estate’s dog guidance
College Valley publishes its own dog policy. Read it before visiting and keep dogs under close control around livestock and wildlife.
Pram access needs checking
Roads, field paths and the approach to Hethpool Linn are different routes. Check the specific surface and any gates before choosing one.
Family valley visits
The valley is a working farming landscape. Supervise children beside roads, livestock and water, including the gorge.
Wheelchair visit needs arrangement
Contact the estate about your needs. A vehicle permit alone does not establish suitable parking, surfaces or toilet provision.

Getting there and choosing where to park
Free parking at Hethpool
The estate offers free parking at Hethpool and uses postcode NE71 6TW in its directions. Follow its named car park directions rather than taking a postcode as the exact arrival point.
Beyond the car park
Vehicles must not continue beyond Hethpool without a permit. The estate offers a limited number of daily permits and asks disabled visitors with access difficulties to contact it. Confirm permission, where you can stop and any conditions before travelling.
The map helps locate the destination. It does not verify an accessible route, entrance or parking bay.

What to enjoy on a shorter visit
Choose a manageable part of the valley
Discuss your intended stop with the estate if you cannot walk far. Ask what can be enjoyed from permitted stopping places and what distance remains after parking. Do not assume you can drive to any landmark shown on a map.
Hethpool Linn
The rocky gorge is one of the valley’s attractions. It is not presented here as an accessible destination. Check the whole approach, including uneven ground, steps or stiles and the return distance, before considering it.
Wildlife and old landscapes
The park describes woodland, wild goats, deer and historic remains around Hethpool. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Enjoy watching from a safe distance and leave animals and archaeological features undisturbed.

Walking sticks, wheelchairs and sight loss
Walking sticks and frames
The official College Valley walk leaflet includes steps and a stile. Ask about a specific shorter alternative before leaving the car park. Turning around early is preferable to taking on a route whose return will be difficult.
Wheelchairs and mobility scooters
The estate asks disabled visitors having difficulty accessing the valley to contact Catherine@college-valley.co.uk. Discuss your chair, travelling support, surfaces, gradients and the exact stopping place. Do not assume a private valley road is a traffic free wheelchair trail.
Blind and partially sighted visitors
Roads remain in use by residents, farm vehicles and permitted traffic. Ask about quiet stopping places and consider a companion for unfamiliar terrain. No tactile or independently navigable route is verified here.

Refreshments, toilets and seated rests
Plan refreshments independently
A visitor café or shop at Hethpool has not been confirmed for this guide. Bring what you need and arrange any essential indoor rest stop before travelling. Holiday accommodation is not a public visitor facility.
Toilets and seated rests
Public toilets, accessible cubicle details, Changing Places provision and reliable bench spacing have not been confirmed. Ask the estate before committing to a visit that depends on these facilities.

Weather and seasons
The estate highlights lambing in April and May, when lambs may run onto the road. In every season, check weather and daylight. Rain can affect stream levels and field surfaces; winter brings less margin for an unplanned walk back.
Check the forecast location and date, warnings and daylight before setting out. Adjust the visit to the conditions you find on arrival.
